Signing in to the proxy with your username and password

Updated 2 min read

Most proxies check a username and password on every request. Each proxy you buy has its own. They are not the same as the email and password you use for the dashboard.

Where to find them

  1. In the dashboard, open ISP or Datacenter under Proxies.
  2. Open the proxy you want to use.
  3. The connection card shows the host (Endpoint), the Username, the Password, and the Protocol with its port.

Copy them exactly as shown. Copy in a different format gives you the same details in other layouts, such as HOST:PORT:USER:PASS, if your tool expects one of those.

HTTP and HTTPS proxies

Most tools accept the username and password inside the proxy address:

bash
curl -x "http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT" https://api.ipify.org

Replace USERNAME, PASSWORD, HOST and PORT with the values from the proxy's page. If it prints an IP address, you are connected.

If your password has special characters

Some characters have a special meaning inside a web address, so the tool cannot tell where the password ends. These are @, :, /, # and %. Replace each one with its percent-encoded form. For example, the password my@pass:word is written like this inside the address:

my%40pass%3Aword

The other option is to give the username and password separately, so the address carries neither:

bash
curl -x "http://HOST:PORT" --proxy-user "USERNAME:PASSWORD" https://api.ipify.org

SOCKS5 proxies

SOCKS5 sends the username and password in its own opening exchange, not in an HTTP header. With curl, start the address with socks5h://. See Using SOCKS5 instead of HTTP.

Getting a new password

On the proxy's page, choose Generate a new password. The old password stops working straight away, so update every tool that uses it.

If it does not work

  1. A 407 Proxy Authentication Required message means the proxy did not accept the login. What a 407 or 403 message means goes through it.
  2. Check that no space or line break was copied together with the password.
  3. Browsers and some desktop programs remember proxy logins. If you changed the password, clear the saved one.
  4. If the proxy is set to IP allowlist, its username and password do not work. See Letting the proxy recognise your IP address.
